Netrunner 2016.1 Review

Netrunner is a free, open source GNU/Linux distribution that offers a lean KDE experience. It comes in two different flavors. A standard release which is based on Kubuntu and the other one, a rolling distribution is based on Arch, or more specifically on Manjaro.

The Everyday Linux User has published a review of recently released Netrunner 2016.1, latest updated image of Netrunner rolling distribution. Reviewer had a good time with Netrunner during his one week experiments. However, he points out it's bulkiness and resource usage. He things that, Netrunner standard release is for ordinary people and rolling release is for those who prefer to play with their operating system.

There are two versions of Netrunner available, the standard release which is based on Kubuntu which itself is based on Debian and the one which I am reviewing today which is based on Manjaro which in turn is based on Arch. Whether you use the Debian base or the Manjaro base you will always end up with the Plasma desktop environment. I have had Netrunner running for over a week and I have used it on my main laptop therefore I feel I have had long enough to find out the good, the bad and the downright ugly.

Netrunner Rolling 2016.01 Released

The Netrunner team announced release of Netrunner Rolling 16.01, latest stable update of Manjaro/Arch based GNU/Linux  distribution offering a classical KDE plasma experience.

Netrunner 16.01 is result of 3 months of development effort and comes with a lot of updated packages such as Plasma 5.5.4, KDE Applications 15.12.2, Linux Kernel 4.4.2, Firefox 44.0.2, Thunderbird 38.6.0,LibreOffice 5 ...etc.

From release announcement:
This release marks one change from previously released pre-packaged ISOs: We’ve decided not to ship akonadi and the KDE PIM suite default with this release in favor of more lightweight alternatives.

Due to the power and flexibility of Arch packagemanagement it is easy for people who enjoy using Kdepim to install it via one single package called 'kde-meta-kdepim', that pulls in all previously shipped packages again.
Everything else is shipped as usual with their latest versions and should run as expected.
See official release announcement for additional details and screenshots.

Netrunner Rolling 2015.11 - A Weird Distribution : Review

The dedoimedo portal has published a review of recently released Netrunner Rolling 2015.11. Netrunner Rolling, as different from main distribution which is based on Ubuntu, is based on Arch and Manjaro. The reviewer observes that Netrunner Rolling is a weird distribution comparing to the main distribution.

Netrunner Rolling is a weird distro. Unlike the bi-annual main release, it does not rely on Ubuntu and its siblings for the majority of its code. Rather, it wanders into the darker, less popular corners of the Linuxosphere, where Arch and Manjaro lurk. But we don't mind. Plus, it's the distro testing season!

I've tested this flavor twice, both times last year, and my impressions were mixed. The first time, the distro was quite decent, less so the second time around. Armed with a brand new test laptop and passion, I set about giving Netrunner Rolling a third chance. Let's see what gives.
