LXLE Eclectica 16.04.2 released with window snap and other cool features

The LXLE team has announced release of LXLE Eclectica 16.04.2, an Ubuntu Mini/Lubuntu Core based GNU/Linux distribution offering simple, lightweight and resource efficient desktop experience. This release of LXLE is based on Ubuntu 16.04.2 and brings all updates and bug fixes from the base project.

LXLE 16.04.2 is not a clear cut release, instead it is an updated snapshot in 16.04 LTS series. It enables the existing users of LXLE 16.04.x series can update their system using regular system update tools or using the update command apt update & apt upgrade.

Some of the cool and exciting features in LXLE 16.04.2 are listed in release announcement published in projects website.
  • Menu Layout - reconfigured for cleaner, less cluttered navigation.
  • Control Menu - completely reworked to act as a dynamic 'Control Panel'.
  • Consistency - theme tweaks throughout the system for a more uniform look.
  • Proposed - Fixed 'proposed' Ubuntu repository not being included by default. 
  • Zenburned - Zenburn theme used as inspiration for custom terminal color scheme. 
  • QT+gtk - forced gtk theme adaptation for stubborn qt based default applications.
  • Languages - Installer slideshow and custom menu entries have been fully translated. 
  • Htop - replaced lxtask due to memory usage and new enhanced terminal capabilities. 
  • Grub/Login - backgrounds set to default wallpaper for overall theme consistency.
  • Games - semi new selection to adhere to 'desktop' games philosophy & save space. 
  • Synaptic - reconfigured to showcase more features and facilitate ease of use. 
  • PenguinPills - easy to use 'front end' for numerous command line virus scanners.
  • Drivers - image headers now included by default to enable easier installation.
  • Updates - update notifier checks unattended-upgrades log for non automatic updates.

LXLE 16.04.1 released

Following the release of first point release in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS series, LXLE team has also announced release of 16.04.1, first updated release in project's 16.04 series which is known by the code name Eclectica. LXLE is a lightweight GNU/Linux distribution built over core Lubuntu release.

LXLE 16.04.1 release brings all updated packages from official Ubuntu repositories, additionally it has added PPA's to provide latest version of packages like LibreOffice. Also, some of the applications from GNOME packages has been replaced with their MATE counterparts to offer consistent user experience.

All software has been updated to their latest stable versions available for Ubuntu 16.04.1. Added PPA's ensure up to date apps of some of the most popular software such as LibreOffice. Overall the apps has been streamlined and slimmed. Even with the inclusion of three small Assistive Technology programs like a maginifier and onscreen keyboard.

This version of LXLE was pretty difficult. A number of Gnome apps had to be replaced with their Mate twin application to maintain a consistent user interface. Many programs and solutions had to come from many different sources to make 16.04.1 of LXLE possible. A very eclectic OS. Hence the name, Eclectica.

LXLE 16.04 Beta 64bit is ready for testing

The LXLE developers announced availability of LXLE 16.04 beta images for testing. Currently testing images are only available for 64 bit architectures. LXLE is a Lubuntu LTS based GNU/Linux distribution that can revive old computers and netbooks with low resources.

At the moment only the 64bit is ready for testing, minor issues are delaying the 32bit, however it should be available soon. A few changes were required this release to keep and stay consistent/coherent with the rest of the OS. A number of MATE apps have replaced Gnome apps in this manner. A few Mint apps also make an appearance to facilitate common task easily. LXLE went on a diet in general shaving a couple hundred megabytes off the download by streamlining applications and services by default. While supplying more user features than ever, system resource usage remains very low allowing the OS to run comfortably on any PC produced in the past decade.

LXLE 14.04.4 'Posh' Released

The LXLE team announced release of LXLE 14.04.4, latest update in LXLE 14.04.x 'Posh' series. LXLE is an Ubuntu LTS based GNU/Linux distribution that comes with a well tweaked version of LXDE, to power low resource computers.



From release announcement:
The 'Posh' version of LXLE has been readied and tested since it's last release candidate and in the subsequent days of the update to Seamonkey 2.40, which is a core component of the overall desktop experience provided by the operating system; ensuring performance and compatibility with the suite update was critical before official release.

During this wait, small polish to the browser and overall user interface was applied, essientially smoothing out any rough edges of the new 'Posh Paradigm' introduced in this release. Posh is expected to provide not only a familiar yet dynamic low resource LXDE desktop but also a layout easily mimicked by LXQT if a version is ever officially offered.

LXLE 14.04.4 'Posh' Release Candiate is Available

The LXLE team announced availability of LXLE 14.04.4 RC, development release of upcoming stable update in LXLE 14.04.x series. LXLE is an eclectic respin of Lubuntu LTS with its own user support and it is intended for old and low resource computers.

While working on changes to the user interface, components and software that were to be included with the upcoming 16.04 release, it became clear that updating 14.04 to match 16.04 was inevitable as 12.04 has been. So instead of backing tracking, the distribution tippy toed to the edge with the latest LXDE core to bring the features necessary to implement the new LXLE user interface the 'Posh Paradigm'.

Building on the ideas of many desktops of the past and present 'Paradigms' while taking advantage of new and existing features of the latest LXDE desktop most users should find themselves to be in a comfortable, familiar, highly productive environment. While trying not to take away features the goal was to streamline running services, remove buggy features while providing LXLE with it's own distinct user interface.
