Serving 9 months of support period, Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak will be reaching it's scheduled end of life (EOL) on 20th July 2017. After this date, there won't be any security updates available for this release and hence it is highly recommended to update to a supported system.
Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak was released on 13th October 2016. As per Ubuntu non-LTS release support policy, it will complete 9 months of support on coming 13th and will leave support period after one more week. Ubuntu 16.10 migration path is through Ubuntu 17.04.

Ubuntu announced its 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) release almost 9 months ago, on October 13, 2016. As a non-LTS release, 16.10 has a 9-month support cycle and, as such, the support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 16.10 will reach end of life on Thursday, July 20th.
