The Linux Mint community has announced release of Linux Mint 18 KDE edition, a community flavor of Linux Mint project featuring KDE as default desktop environment.
Linux Mint 18 KDE is built on top of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and hence it can provide support till 2021. This release ships several updated packages and refinements to provide better user experience for people who prefer KDE desktop over Linux Mint's officially supported MATE and Cinnamon desktops.

- KDE Plasma 5.6. Also, APT sources includes Kubuntu backport repos, which help to install newer versions of KDE Desktop.
- SDDM is default display manger.
- Update manager has got updates in appearance and under the hood.
- "apt install" and "apt remove" now show progress output.
- New commands were introduced to support Debian's syntax. "apt full-upgrade" does the same as "apt dist-upgrade", "apt edit-sources" the same as "apt sources" and "apt showhold" the same as "apt held".

- HiDPI support is largely improved in Linux Mint 18. Firefox and most of the Mint apps (mintdesktop, mintsystem, mintwelcome, mintlocale, mintdrivers, mintnanny, mintstick, mint-common, mintupdate, mintbackup and mintupload) migrated to GTK3.
- Popular applications such as Steam, Spotify, Dropbox or even Minecraft were added to the Software Manager and are now easier to install.
- Gufw, the graphical firewall configuration tool, was added to the default software selection and is now installed by default.
