Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is out with all official flavors

Thus, the wait is over. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, the most awaited release of project has been released. This release includes all other official flavors of Ubuntu including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Mythbuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio ..etc.

Ubuntu 16.04 introduces a lot of great features. These features includes introduction of 'snaps' package format, which will help to install same package in different Ubuntu powered devices. Ubuntu 16.04 will continue to support debian packages as well. Another features is LXD which is a pure container hypervisor with OpenStack Mitaka. Ubuntu 16.04 also includes support of IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. This release also includes support for new file systems like ZFS and CephFS.

21st April 2016 : Canonical announced release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS featuring the new ‘snap’ package format and LXD pure-container hypervisor. This is the latest version of the world’s most widely used Linux platform across desktop, IoT and cloud computing.

New features in this release enable faster and simpler software delivery and operations. “The addition of ‘snaps’ for faster and simpler updates, and the LXD container hypervisor for ultra-fast and ultra-dense cloud computing, demonstrate a commitment to customer needs that sets Ubuntu apart as the platform for innovation and scale,” said Dustin Kirkland who leads platform strategy at Canonical.
