The LibreOffice, worlds most popular open source office suite, is celebrating its 6th birthday on 28th September of 2016. It was on 28th September 2010, a press release was distributed announcing the transformation of OpenOffice.org community to The Document Foundation. Since then, The Document Foundation is actively developing LibreOffice as a high quality product with the support of several sponsors and developers around the earth.
The LibreOffice project was initially started from OpenOffice.org suite which was founded and sponsored by Sun Microsystems. Later Sun Microsystems was acquired by Apache, and it was told that the growth of office suite is on fall and there should be some serious remedy. So, the OpenSource.org community, group of people who were involved in development and promotion of office suite, decided to form The Document Foundation to speed up development and it was founded.

Within 6 years, The Document Foundation has a lot of achievements to be proud of. This includes establishment of stable governance, a growing team taking care of daily tasks and a community spanning over six continents. Also, during this period, the project was able to attract new developers for 72 months in a row, Finally, LibreOffice has just won Infoworld’s Bossie (Best of Open Source) Awards for the sixth straight year in a row.

The Internet, September 28, 2010 – The community of volunteers who develop and promote OpenOffice.org, the leading free office software, announce a major change in the project’s structure.
